Buying After a BFG Germany Posting
British Forces Germany personnel returning to the UK face a specific mortgage challenge: their recent address history includes BFPO addresses in Germany and civilian German addresses, neither of which standard UK mortgage lenders can process through automated address verification systems. Automated credit and address checks routinely reject or flag BFG address histories, causing delays and unnecessary rejections that forces-specialist lenders resolve immediately.
How BFG Address History Affects UK Mortgages
UK lenders require 3 years of UK address history for automated processing. BFPO Germany addresses are UK postcodes (BFPO XX) and should be processable, but many lender systems cannot handle the format correctly. German civilian addresses (Paderborn, Gütersloh, Fallingbostel) are entirely outside automated UK systems. Forces-specialist underwriters who handle BFG cases manually are not affected by these system limitations.
Buying on Return from Germany
Many BFG returners purchase properties in Hampshire and Surrey to return to the UK permanently after German postings. The Aldershot, Fleet, Farnborough and Camberley market is particularly active with BFG returners who served at Sennelager, Paderborn, Fallingbostel or elsewhere in Germany before the Basing Review. We have advised hundreds of BFG returners across the Hampshire/Surrey market and understand the specific challenges.
FHTB for BFG Returners
FHTB applies normally for BFG returners provided eligibility criteria are met. The address history does not affect FHTB eligibility — only the mortgage application. We run FHTB and the forces-specialist mortgage application simultaneously for BFG returners.
We have processed BFG address histories across Germany, Cyprus, Belize, Falkland Islands, Brunei, Canada and all major overseas posting locations. Call 01252 111 000 →
